Their waiter approached. “Sir? I have your bill ready. We’re closing now due to the weather.”

“What about the weather?” Geoff asked.

The waiter raised an eyebrow. “There’s tornado warnings out for the area fifty miles west. Those could include us any minute.”

Tornado? Why were they just now hearing about the warnings? Because they’d been otherwise engaged the last several hours. Even here, they’d been so engrossed in their conversation they hadn’t paid much attention to how few customers still occupied the restaurant.

Geoff grabbed her hand, placed his arm around her shoulders and ushered her back to the car as soon as their bill was paid. No time to argue about who would pay. She’d reimburse him later.

Without discussing it, he took the keys and assumed the driver’s seat. He turned on the radio, scanned stations until he found a weathercast, but static cut into whatever the announcer was saying.

“Are we in danger?” she asked. “I’m more familiar with earthquakes than tornadoes,”

“Hard to say until I see a weather map,” he returned. “Even then, it’s sometimes hard to tell if one or more will materialize. They mainly show air conditions and pinpoint areas most likely to be affected. We’ll check at the motel desk as soon as we get back. See what they advise.”

The ride seemed to take forever. Alex watched out the window for swirling air columns. Though his mood had become more serious, Geoff didn’t appear frightened. Probably used to these things. She, on the other hand, had little experience with this type of storm, although tornadoes weren’t completely foreign to California. Most of her knowledge came from films and television shows, where girls from Kansas and cows were swept into the whirlwind.

Suddenly, the wind picked up. Trees swayed, leaves that shouldn’t be dropping until fall flitted across the road. Even with the windows sealed tight, the air hummed with mounting energy.

Tiny drops of moisture dotting the windshield expanded into blobs and then became a steady downpour. The wipers struggled to keep up.

“I’ll drop you off at the front door,” Geoff said as they approached the building. “See what you can learn at the front desk. I’ll park the car away from the building and trees.”

“But you’ll get drenched.”

“Got dry clothes in my room.”

She paused out of concern for him.

“Go! Every second counts right now,” he said tightly.

She ran for the door, getting soaked in even that short distance.

No one was at the front desk, although she heard a television or radio somewhere close. “Hello? Anyone back there?”

A young man about twenty stuck his head out the door of a room off to the side of the desk. “Yes, ma’am? Are you checking in?”

“No, I’m already a guest. I heard a tornado might be coming this way. What do you know about that?”

“I been watchin’ the TV weather guy. S’hard to tell how bad things really are. These guys get so excited, tryin’ to show off their knowledge and beat the competition. There’s a sign on your door tellin’ you what to do in the event of a tornado.
